TIMOTHY J COWEN

Software Developer, Scouting Leader, Youth Volunteer

Who am I?

My name is TJ Cowen. I am a Software Developer who works at Desire2Learn (D2L) in Kitchener, Ontario. I have always loved technology, and have striven to understand as much as I can about what makes our devices tick. I have a healthy background in C-based languages, but have also spent time working with Java for Android and JavaScript in React in the industry. I do some web development for fun in my spare time, to further my own knowledge of development.

When I am not working or coding, I like to volunteer my time with the local youth. I volunteer with the BP Service Association as an Assistant Troop Scouter, planning camps and meetings to teach the youth the skills of traditional scouting. I also help run youth programs such as an after school program and various drop-in programs, and I volunteer at a local elementary school.

My love of helping out is deeply rooted in my faith. I am a devout Christian, and I do my best to show this in everything I do. In addition to my volunteering with youth, I am also active in my church community. As a Christian, I believe that every life is precious; whether somebody is another race, religion, sexuality, or gender, I do my best to love them as a sibling.

These are a few of my favourite things...

MY HOMETOWN

I was born and raised in Cambridge, Ontario; part of the Region of Waterloo. Right in the middle of the 'tech hub' of Canada, it is a great place to be for a Software Developer to be.

One of the most exciting moments for me in my recent life was when I got hired to work at Desire2Learn. I have a passion for education, so helping to create tools used by educators is a fantastic thing for me to be doing.

An extremely proud moment in my life was graduating my program and receiving my diploma. I spent years within the walls of Conestoga College under some of the most amazing faculty, learning the ins and outs of what it means to be a great software developer.
